Motorcycling Across Indiana

The Crossroads of America

Bill Murphy is not just an enthusiastic motorcycle rider, he is a history and philosophy enthusiast as well; and he had just written his third book in the Motorcycling Across America Series, Motorcycling Across Indiana. Murphy says,

“It’s all about the journey, not the destination but the destinations are wonderful, too”.

Motorcycling Across Indiana recommends seventeen routes to explore from the dunes and sandy beaches of Lake Michigan in the north to the forests, cliffs, waterfalls and mighty Ohio River in the south. He takes you on the historic roads such as the National Road, the Michigan Road and the Buffalo Trace that date back to animal migrations and early explorers and settlers. Are you with me so far? Buffalo Trace? OK. Then there’s more “modern” roads built in response to the new-fangled horseless carriages such as the Lincoln or Dixie Highways. He never plans a route on the highways that “have had their character stripped away, leaving efficiency, but no soul in its place”.

Scenic beauty, historical sites, attractions and a heck of a lot of fun is what riding in Indiana brings. This guide will help. It has maps, mileage charts and an appendix filled with emergency phone numbers, major hotel and motel phone numbers, motorcycle repair shops and dealers and a few pages of fun local rides makes this compendium indispensable for those tourists on two wheels or four who agree with Bill that rural roads “…have soul. They’re sexy and natural – with hills and curves and lots of character”.

Bill Murphy has been motorcycling across the Midwest for over 30 years. His previous books include Motorcycling Across Michigan, 2ND Edition (Arbutus Press, 2005) and Motorcycling Across Ohio (Arbutus Press, 2006). Bill is currently working on his next book in the series, Motorcycling Across Wisconsin.
